While the dual-screen Acer Iconia may have received the most attention at yesterday’s launch, it was not the only new device Acer were showing off to the world. Along with the Iconia, Acer also announced some new tablets, a yet-to-be-named smartphone, and some software to glue them all together.
Acer announced the release of both a 10.1 inch and a 7 inch tablet, both of which are based on the Android OS and will run the upcoming Honeycomb release. The 10.1 inch model features a dual-core Tegra processor, HDMI output, and 1280 x 800 resolution, with a 5MP rear camera and a front facing camera for conference calls and the like.
The 7 inch tablet is pretty much identical, also featuring integrated WiFi and 3G like its bigger brother. Despite its smaller size, it will also feature the same 16:10, 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and include support for Flash 10.1, DLNA technology, and a customised Acer UI that will hopefully work with Android and not strangle it.
Along with the two Android tablets, Acer also announced a 10 inch Windows 7 variation, so you certainly can’t criticize them for putting all their eggs in one basket. The Windows device is likely to run on a next generation AMD platform and will be available in February. However, if you like the look of the Android devices, you will have to wait until April when they hit the stores.
Along with all the tablet action, Acer also announced a new smartphone to the world, even if it doesn’t yet have a name. The 4.8 inch monster phone comes with 1024 x 480 resolution, a 1GHz processor, an 8MP camera, Flash 10.1 support, Bluetooth 3.0, an accelerometer, and runs on Android. This is as much a tiny tablet as it is a large smartphone, and will also become available in April, 2011.
On the software side of things, Acer announced more details about its Clear.fi system, which is designed to give Acer tablet and phone users the ability to share files and download apps and media content from the Acer Alive platform.
